Maintain a Positive Attitude (by Fenny West)

Maintain a positive attitude always, believing that the Word of God is true and you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. Believe that you are what God says you are and have what He says you have, and refuse any suggestion that suggests otherwise. Renew your mind daily by meditating on the Word until it saturates you and moves you into action aligned with the will of God for you (1Tim.4:15, Rom12:2). As a man thinks so he is (Proverbs 23:7). Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are of good report, praise-worthy, or excellent, think on us things. (Phil4:8)

Joshua and Caleb were amongst the twelve spies who went to spy the promised land. They all saw the giants in the land brought back grapes so big that it needed more than one person carrying them. However, ten spies focused on the spies and spread an evil report which cause most of the people to fear, get depressed and doubted God’s ability, care or love. Only Joshua and Caleb took sides with God and believed that the giants will be bread to them if God was with them. This was pleasing to God because without faith it is impossible to please God.

30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. Num13:30

And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:

And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.

If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.

Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not. Num14:6-9

Regardless of how menacing and macho Goliath was, David focused on the bigness and towering and all-powerful nature and faithfulness of his God. He kept talking about what his God will and is able to do. This is what God wants you to do. Take your eyes off the challenges, problems and difficulties. Think of how awesome, how great and sovereign your God is. Sing praises in the midst of challenges like Judah who faced an armada of invading troops from an alliance of many nations. Seek the face of the Lord as they did so He could speak to you , give you a divine strategy to use to overcome the enemies that you face. Know that God is interested in all your affairs, no matter how small you think they are.

45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands. (1Sam.17:45-47)

And when you seek God’s face be prepared to do what He says, even if it sounds ridiculous. In the case of Judah, God comforted them with a word of prophecy and the they were told to go and face the army that outnumbered them about 100:1. Also not only this, they were told to put the choir in front of the army. They sang praises to God and at one point they blew their trumpets and as they did, the enemy forces began to fight against themselves until they completely wiped themselves out and littered the battle field with their bodies and silver and gold and other precious gems. It took three whole days for them to gather the spoil.

15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.

16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.

17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you.(2Chro.20:15-17)

20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.

21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth for ever.

22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.

25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much. ( 2Chro.20:20-25)

When there was no water and the people murmured, God instructed Moses to strike the rock  (Ex.17:6). He did and water came out for them to drink. On another occasion when the water they had was bitter, God instructed him to cut a branch and throw into the river. It looked ridiculous, but he did it and the water became sweet. (Ex15:15) So let your thinking be in line with what God said. If possible, be a fool for God. Do what He says1Cor3:25-30). This means you should know how to hear from Him. You should know His voice. Jesus said My sheep hear My voice and the voice of a stranger they will not follow. (John10:27-28)

Say to yourself: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil4:13). If God be for me who can be against me (Rom8:31). I am strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. (Eph6:10) God is working in me both to will and do according to His good pleasure (Phil2:13). I am more than a conqueror (Rom8:37). I am the head and not the tail. I am sufficient in God’s sufficiency .(2Cor3:5-6) God is for me and no one can be against me. Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. I am born of God and I have overcome the world. All things are mine (1John4:4, 1John5:4)
