A Notable Woman, or Man ( by Bob Gas)

A Notable Woman, or Man

‘…Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman…’ 2 Kings 4:8
The Bible says: ‘…Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food. And she said to her husband…”Let us make him a small upper room…and let us put a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lamp stand…” (vv. 8-10 NKJV). Observe: 1) Whatever you need more of; make room for it. You don’t get what you ‘want’ in life; you get what you ‘prepare for’. This woman’s generosity toward Elisha resulted in her having a child when she wasn’t able to, and her child later being raised from the dead when sickness claimed him. When you make room for God in your life; you make room for the blessings that come with Him. 2) Notice the four things she put in the prophet’s room: a) A bed. There are times when you must run, and there are times when you must rest. Indeed, if you don’t learn to slow down, you’ll break down. b) A table. You need spiritual food to nourish your soul. If you plan to keep giving out, you must keep taking in. c) A chair. This speaks of study. ‘Study to [show] thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth’ (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV). d) A lamp. A place of illumination. Even after you’ve studied long and hard, you need the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to your heart. And that’s how to become a notable woman (or man).

Psalms 1:

Book One: Psalms 1 — 41The Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly

1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.

3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.

23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

Keep God’s Word Close at Hand (by Rick Warren)

“He should keep it with him all the time and read from it every day of his life.” (Deuteronomy 17:19a NCV)

For most of the 2,000-year history of the Church, only priests got to personally read the Bible, but now billions of us have access to it. In spite of this, many believers are more faithful to reading their daily newspaper than their Bibles.

It’s no wonder why we don’t grow. We can’t watch television for three hours, then read the Bible for three minutes and expect to grow.

Many who claim to believe the Bible “from cover to cover” have never read it from cover to cover. But if you will read the Bible just fifteen minutes a day, you will read completely through it once a year.

If you cut out one 30-minute television program a day and read your Bible instead, you will read through the entire Bible twice a year.

Daily Bible reading will keep you in range of God’s voice. This is why God instructed the kings of Israel to always keep a copy of his Word nearby: “He should keep it with him all the time and read from it every day of his life” (Deuteronomy 17:19a NCV).

But don’t just keep it near you; read it regularly! A simple tool that is helpful for this is a daily Bible reading plan. It will prevent you from just skipping around the Bible arbitrarily and overlooking sections.

Talk About It

With what projects or hobbies do you show great discipline in your attention to them? How can you apply that same discipline to your daily Bible reading?

– How do you think 15 minutes a day in God’s Word would change the way you approach your everyday life?
