Life has its twists and turns. Edwin Stanton “twisted the knife”, calling Abraham Lincoln, “a long-armed creature”. How disparaging! But the President was presidential. With deep love and insight, he forgave. With amazing cords of love, Lincoln drew Stanton close. He repaid evil with good
So doing Stanton was disarmed, his heart warmed and was won.

The fiend was turned into a friend and made a Stirling contribution to the administration of Lincoln.
He was at his bedside all night when he lay dying, and whispered through tears as he passed to the other side: “Now he belongs to the ages.”

What a twist and turn of life!

People who wrong us today may turn out to be our greatest friends tomorrow if we will forgive and restore them.

Through the fall of Adam, we all fell out of love with God. We were all born with the sinful nature of rebellion and disobedience. We became estranged, alienated from God. We became enemies. Adam was driven out of the garden. He lost fellowship with God. We were born in sin and therefore enemies of God.
But we thank God, who in His boundless love and mercy hatch another plan to redeem us and make us friends again. This was made possible when Jesus left His majesty in Glory and came down to earth to die for us. The sinless became sin that we might become the righteousness of God.
This was why Jesus told His disciples,
John 15:13
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
John 15:15
“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”

Jesus did not come to make us Christians but disciples. A disciple is an imitator of Christ. We are to follow His example and delight in and do the Word of God.
John 15:14
“Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.”

He also said, 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 [a]But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, …( Matt5:43-44)

On the cross, He prayed for those who were torturing and crucifying Him, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” Luke23:34

This is our example to follow.

Has anyone disparaged, disdained you like Stanton did Lincoln. Take a leaf from Lincoln. Forgive and see beyond the ill. See them through the eyes of God. Pray,” Father, forgive them. For they know not what they do. Peter wrote,  “love will cover a multitude of sins.” 1Pet4:8

Paul wrote, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21
Ephesians 4:31
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice:”
Ephesians 4:32
“And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

Jesus taught His taught his disciples to pray,
“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”
Matthew 6:12

When the mob seized Stephen because of his devotion to God and began to stone him as he preached, Stephen prayed for them before he died, Father, lay not this sin to their charge.” Acts7:60 How magnanimous!
This is the example we should follow.

Peter was one of the three disciples who were closest to Jesus. But he denied Jesus three times when it mattered most. And when this prophecy was fulfilled, Peter who had earlier bragged that he would never disown Jesus, wept bitterly. He was so disappointed that soon after the crucifixion, he went fishing, abandoning any hope to minister. He taught it was game over for him..

However, after the resurrection, Jesus came back and restored him. Three times he denied Jesus, three times He reassured Peter.
You too can forgive and love and restore others. Love is patient and kind and keeps no record of wrongs. When you hold a grudge, you imprison yourself. You cannot move forward. It’s like drinking poison and expecting another person to die.

Forgiveness frees you; it is for you.
joseph forgave his brothers who hated him because of his dream and sold him into slavery. When he had the opportunity to pay them back with starvation when they wandered into Egypt in search of food, Joseph, who was now a Prime Minister, rewarded them with good.

He saw his position as a fulfillment of vision and purpose and invited the whole family to Egypt and settled them in the best of the land- Goshen.

11 There I will provide for you, lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty; for there are still five years of famine.” ’ Gen45:11

Later when Jacob died, his brothers were afraid that Joseph would turn against them. They begged for forgiveness.

“I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18 Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”

19 Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God?

20 But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. Gen50:17-20

You too can restore those who have hurt you.

Job did just that when he prayed for those miserable comforters who spoke ill of him when he was going through the mill. God rebuked them and told them to go to Job to pray for them. They went and Job prayed for them.

7    And so it was, after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, that the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.

8    Now therefore, take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and My servant Job shall pray for you. For I will accept him, lest I deal with you according to your folly; because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.

9    So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD commanded them; for the LORD had accepted Job.

10  And the LORD restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. Job42:7-10

Notice that Job was restored as he restored others. God blessed him twice as much as before.

This is what awaits you as you open your heart and bless those who have cursed you, misused you or disdained you.

You too can turn that foe into a friend. Let them see Jesus in you. Do what He would do, because, as He is so you are.(1John4:17) You can do all things through Christ Who strengthens you. (Phil4:13) Take the first step and reach out and God will make His grace abound toward you and you will turn that foe into a friend.

Let us pray:
Father, I thank you for reconciling me to yourself. I was once an enemy but you forgave me when I came to Christ. You made the enemy a friend.
I forgive those who have hurt me. I refuse to take it personally. I forgive them as you forgave me.
I shall repay evil with good. And I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

As You Water, You Will be Watered

As you water, you’ll be watered

By the Alpha and the Omega

He’ll open the windows of heaven

And shower on you divine dainties.

All the works of your hand will prosper

No weapon formed against you will prosper.

Angels will always be surrounding you;

Ministering to you and protecting you.

You will become a delightful land

And whatever you decree shall stand.

And when they say there is a casting down

You will say there is a lifting up.

21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.24 Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.25 Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.26 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. Job22:21-29

:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Luk6:38

Treasures of darkness

in jars of clay;

Exceedingly great and precious

Promises, purchased with the

Precious blood of the Lamb.

These treasures are seen as trash

By the world but seen as gold by the wise.

Guard well your heart.

 It is the Garden of God; the lamp of God;

the storehouse of God for the goodies

and bounties and beauties of God.

Prov.4:23, 2Pet.1:3-4,2Cor.4:7-9,Isa45:3

2     ‘ I will go before you And make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze And cut the bars of iron.

3     I will give you the treasures of darkness And hidden riches of secret places, That you may know that I, the LORD, Who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel.

Cast Down but Unconquered

7     But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.

8     We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;

9     persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed —

3     as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,

4     by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Oil For the Light ( C.H. Spurgeon)

Exodus 25:6

Oil for the light.

My soul, how much thou needest this, for thy lamp will not long continue to burn without it. Thy snuff will smoke and become an offence if light be gone, and gone it will be if oil be absent. Thou hast no oil well springing up in thy human nature, and therefore thou must go to them that sell and buy for thyself, or like the foolish virgins, thou wilt have to cry, “My lamp is gone out.” Even the consecrated lamps could not give light without oil; though they shone in the tabernacle they needed to be fed, though no rough winds blew upon them they required to be trimmed, and thy need is equally as great.

Under the most happy circumstances thou canst not give light for another hour unless fresh oil of grace be given thee. It was not every oil that might be used in the Lord’s service; neither the petroleum which exudes so plentifully from the earth, nor the produce of fishes, nor that extracted from nuts would be accepted; one oil only was selected, and that the best olive oil. Pretended grace from natural goodness, fancied grace from priestly hands, or imaginary grace from outward ceremonies will never serve the true saint of God; he knows that the Lord would not be pleased with rivers of such oil. He goes to the olive-press of Gethsemane, and draws his supplies from Him who was crushed therein. The oil of gospel grace is pure and free from lees and dregs, and hence the light which is fed thereon is clear and bright.

Our churches are the Saviour’s golden candelabra, and if they are to be lights in this dark world, they must have much holy oil. Let us pray for ourselves, our ministers, and our churches, that they may never lack oil for the light. Truth, holiness, joy, knowledge, love, these are all beams of the sacred light, but we cannot give them forth unless in private we receive oil from God the Holy Ghost.

Believers Are Salt and Light

13   “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

14   “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

15   Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

16   Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Colossians 3: Not Carnality but Christ

1     If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.

2     Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

3     For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

4     When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

5     Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

6     Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,

7     in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.

8     But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.

9     Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,

10   and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,

Character of the New Man

12   Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;

13   bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

14   But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

15   And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

16   Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

17   And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Walking in the Spirit

come comforter

16   I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

17   For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

18   But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19   Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,

20   idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,

21   envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22   But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23   gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Romans 12: Living Sacrifices to God

1     I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

2          And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.Rom12:1-2

Ephesians 5: Walk in Love

1     Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.

2     And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

3     But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints;

4          neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

14        I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.John17:14

15   Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not!

16   Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.”

17   But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

18   Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.

19   Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

20   For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Be Holy

14   Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?

15   And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?

16   And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ” I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.”

17   Therefore ” Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”

18   ” I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty.”
