Do You Know How To Pray Pastor Chris Oyakhilome
When You Pray Make Decrees Pastor Chris Oyakhilome
Here’s the authentic text from a forwarded email of politically incorrect prayer delivered by Pastor Joe Wright before the Kansas House of Representatives in 1996.
Analysis of Joe Wright’s Prayer
While not accurate word-for-word, the text below is a fair transcription of an actual prayer delivered before the Kansas House of Representatives by Central Christian Church Pastor Joe Wright on January 23, 1996. It has circulated continuously on the Internet ever since.
At least one legislator walked out during the prayer, according to the Kansas City Star. Others made speeches criticizing what the House Minority Leader, a Democrat, called “the extreme, radical views” reflected in the prayer. In February 1996 Paul Harvey aired it nationally on the radio.

Here’s an email example contributed by Steve F. on February 7, 2000:
This was sent to me by a cousin from Wyoming. Maybe it needs to be sent to our government officials. Hmm!
When minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new sessions of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:
Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness to seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, “Woe to those who call evil good,” but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values.
We confess that:
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it moral pluralism.
We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism.
We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle.
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery
We have neglected the needy and we’ve called it self-preservation.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn babies and called it choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.
We have abused power and called it politics.
We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts, today.
Try us O God and see if there be any wicked way in us. Cleanse us from every sin and set us free.
Heal this land, O God. Restore this nation. Grant us wisdom to guide and set us free. Take our wickedness and sin and cleanse us from within. Hear our cry. Hear our plea in the name of Jesus, and heal this land. Amen.
The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In six short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea.
Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his show “The Rest of the Story” on the radio and received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired.
With the Lord’s help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can be called one nation under God.
